Resurgent Medvedev Secures Maiden Championship in Nearly 30 Months
19 of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one victories have been earned on hard courts
A revitalized the Russian player claimed his maiden championship for nearly 30 months with victory over Frenchman Moutet in the competition title decider.
The athlete, a former number one, has experienced a torrid period, winning just one match at the major tournaments and suffering a meltdown at the American major.
The player's varied form on the tennis tour - and difficulties with his serve in particular - led to him exiting of the elite rankings and eventually separating with long-time coach his previous coach.
Now training with Johansson and Goetzke, he has consistently improved in the last few weeks - culminating in a hard-fought competitive win over Frenchman Moutet.
It is Medvedev's initial trophy since the Rome competition and initial on a hardcourt since March of 2023.
The win also indicates Medvedev has achieved 21 championships at twenty-one distinct events.
"This marks the first occasion I'm at a tournament with my both daughters together, so to win a championship is really nice," said ranked player Medvedev.
"This victory is in dedication of my child my daughter, because the initial championship I got when my child Alisa was born was for her."
The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his previous six finals, including in that event in the past months.
Medvedev's counter-punching approach and frequent emotional displays on the tennis court had prompted some to question if his ability to perform at the highest level was concluded.
But the player has altered his approach in the last few weeks, attempting to approach the net and perform assertively, reinforced by an improved serve.
The champion came back from a deficit in the first set against the difficult Moutet, taking 4 of the last five points to gain the advantage.
The pair exchanged service breaks in the following set before Moutet, striving for his first tour victory, took control to push for a final set.
He rescued four early break points in a competitive final set before Medvedev won the break to 15 to serve for the match.
Fittingly, he clinched the win with a shot at the net area, with the Frenchman incapable to handle a return after a lengthy match.
